Books Everyone Should Read at Least Once!

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

There are some books that we just never forget, that keep us on the edge of our seats, or teach us something we need to learn. What books do our members recommend that everyone should read at least once in their lives?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

This book has been knocking around for a while, thirty years to be exact! The Secret History was released in 1992 it has remained a firm favourite, and was voted in the top three for books our members would recommend. Once you read this book, we predict you will feel the same way!

So, what’s the Secret history all about? There’s nothing worse than a book recommendation that gives away the entire plot, so we will keep this short!

The Secret History is set in an elite New England College. It tells a story of a group of somewhat eccentric friends, who have dark secrets they are keeping. The story takes the form of and inverted detective story, as we learn within the first two pages about the murder of Bunny, a member of their group of friends. The story tells us about the events before and after the murder, and delves deeply into the characters and the circumstances surrounding the murder. This book explores interesting aspects of group psychology and will have you on the edge of your seat. Be warned, get ready for some late nights you may find it difficult to put it down!

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Let us first warn you, this book is a tearjerker! Get your tissues at the ready, as this book may cause you to shed a tear by the end. The book tells the story from the perspective of Kathy. The book recounts her memories from her time at Hailsham, a kind of boarding school. It moves between past and present, and details are revealed bit by bit, some which are shocking and will cause you to become both attached to the characters and desperate to see what happens next.

This book will leave you with questions, however many of our members agree that Never Let me Go is one of the best books they have ever read.

Have you got any recommendations for us? We would LOVE to hear them! Send them into us here or Vote for them to feature in one of our Future Bookclub Events.
